Q: Are you Shiloh Shepherd breeders / are your dogs Shiloh Shepherds?
No, though our dogs look extremely similar to Shiloh Shepherds in both physical appearance as well as size. On average, a dog at a healthy weight (NOT fat!) from us ranges as follows:
Females: 80-100+ pounds at maturity, 25-28"+ at the shoulder
Males: 100-140+ pounds at maturity, 27-32+" at the shoulder
What are Shiloh Shepherds?
Shiloh Shepherds are a non-AKC registered breed "in development" created from a specific blend of larger German Shepherd Dogs (most originating from Tina Barber's Shiloh Kennels) crossed with a mix known as MAW by Tina Barber. While Tina Barber may have originated the Shiloh Shepherd breed, she produced many pure AKC registered German Shepherds as well. We breed AKC registered German Shepherd Dogs. Most do have "Shiloh lines" in that parts of their pedigrees can trace back to the German Shepherd Dogs from Tina Barber's Shiloh kennel and the AKC foundations of the Shiloh Shepherd breed who did NOT have the MAW factor. Some familiar names in the foundation of Shiloh Shepherds or "old line Shilohs" that are also in our dogs' pedigrees include:
Shiloh's Easy Rider
Shiloh-Guardian Still Smokin'
Lucas Von Shiloh Special
Shiloh's Wolfin Sasquatch
Shiloh-Kari's Steel Saber
Shiloh's Smoke-In-Szar
Di-Mars Shiloh's Princess Leia
Shiloh's Silver Bullet
Shiloh Captain Caliber Baker
Shilohs Golden Sheba-Express
Super Sweet Sabrina Selah
Zurk Von Sentz
Kind Kye-Anne Selah
Diamond Hill's Lightning Bullet
Shiloh's Kara Lobo Of Emmview
Morris Good Morning Mona
Examples of our dogs would be pictured above in the slideshow, most of them have some Shiloh lines. They are typical of what we breed for - health and intelligence with a sweet temperament. Our dogs, much like Shiloh Shepherds, usually have longer coat, known in the Shiloh Shepherd breed as "plush coats". We sometimes produce short coats as well (these can be referred to as "plush" in German Shepherds if they are a thicker, slightly longer short coat), and known in the Shiloh Shepherd breed as "smooth". We focus on a straighter back as well as having an impressive stature. Our dogs are also similar to Shiloh Shepherds in that we focus on dogs that have less drive than typical working shepherds, generally this will be low to medium versus medium to high.
Shiloh Shepherds have various registries, but none are affiliated with the American Kennel Club. There are:
ISSR Shiloh Shepherds, associated with Tina Barber's International Shiloh Shepherd Registry
ISSDC Shiloh Shepherds, associated with the International Shiloh Shepherd Dog Club
TSSR Shiloh Shepherds, associated with the The Shiloh Shepherd Registry
There are also other various breed clubs which recognize Shiloh Shepherds, and some may not be interchangable. For example, ISSDC Shiloh Shepherds would not be able to register as ISSR Shiloh Shepherds.
Again, while our dogs may look very similar and be indirectly related, our dogs are NOT considered Shiloh Shepherds and are 100% German Shepherd Dogs of AKC traceable lineage.
As a note, up until at least the early 1990s Tina Barber's dogs were AKC registered. Once the MAW factor was brought in, obviously the resulting dogs were no longer AKC German Shepherd Dogs, and around that time, Tina Barber also changed her kennel name to Zion / New Zion. Some owners and breeders of those pure AKC dogs originating from Tina Barber's Shiloh Kennels chose to retain their AKC paperwork when the founder and others left to form the Shiloh Shepherd registry during that time period. However, in the end, "Shiloh lines does not a Shiloh Shepherd make" and does not mean that any of the dogs in its ancestry were crossed with anything else but AKC registered German Shepherd Dogs.
